Caring for Keith

In an instant, the world changed for MAMA member Keith Polischuk and his family. On the evening of June 12, 2005, Keith suffered a serious spinal cord injury after suffering a shattered cervical vertebrae - the result of a tragic diving accident. In that brief moment, Keith's life was transformed and he awoke to a long and difficult road to recovery.

After surgery to stabilize his fractured vertebrae, Keith remained hospitalized at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, with little or no movement in his arms and legs. His spinal cord had endured a tremendous trauma with contusions and compression that resulted in temporary or permanent paralysis. At best, Keith faces a long and difficult journey to regain his mobility.

With the support of family and friends, we can ensure that Keith has the best opportunity for recovery. On July 6, 2005, Keith was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA, a specialized rehabilitation center that treats people with severe spinal cord injuries. Rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center is about pushing the limits, creating new ways of achieving, seeing life a whole new way. It is about taking someone from the depths of tragedy and propelling them back into a productive fulfilling life.

In order to help Keith and his family, The Keith Polischuk Special Trust to assist with the costs associated with his treatment, rehabilitation and special needs. Keith has a tremendous challenge in front of him. With the generous support of family, friends and sponsors, we can help ease this tremendous economic challenge so they can focus on overcoming the physical and emotional challenges that remain ahead.
